Why Mobile-First Design Matters More in India Than Anywhere

Design decisions get made on a large monitor over office WiFi. Buying decisions get made on a six-inch screen on mobile data, sometimes with one bar of signal. The gap between those two experiences is where most websites quietly lose customers.

What mobile-first actually means

Not 'it shrinks to fit'. It means the phone layout is designed first and the desktop version is the adaptation. When you start with desktop and squeeze it down, you end up with hidden content, tiny tap targets and images sized for a screen nobody is using.

The checklist

• Test at 360px width — that is a very common Android screen size in India
• Tap targets at least 44px, with real space between them
• Phone number and WhatsApp reachable without scrolling
• Body text at 16px minimum; anything smaller forces pinch-zoom
• Images in WebP, sized for the phone, lazy loaded below the fold
• Forms with numeric keypads for phone fields and minimal required inputs
• Nothing important hidden behind a hover, which does not exist on touch

Mobile speed is a ranking factor

Google indexes the mobile version of your site and uses mobile Core Web Vitals in ranking. A site that scores 95 on desktop and 40 on mobile is being judged on the 40. Read the mobile number in PageSpeed Insights; the desktop score is close to irrelevant for a local business in Jaipur.
