12 Website Mistakes That Quietly Cost You Customers
None of these are dramatic. Each one removes a small percentage of the people who were going to contact you, and they add up fast.
When a website is not producing enquiries, owners usually assume the design is the problem. It rarely is. It is almost always a handful of small, fixable frictions.
1. The phone number is not tappable
A phone number typed as plain text forces a mobile visitor to select it, copy it and switch apps. Wrapped in a tel: link it is one tap. This is a five-minute fix that measurably changes call volume.
2. The contact form asks for too much
Every additional field reduces submissions. Name and phone is usually enough to start a conversation. Company size, budget range, how they heard about you and a mandatory email address can all be asked on the call.
3. Uncompressed images
A 4MB photo straight from a phone camera on the homepage will take several seconds to load on mobile data. The same image converted to WebP at the right dimensions is often under 200KB and visually identical.
4. Pricing hidden behind 'Contact us'
Hiding price to force a call is intended to create leads. In practice, someone comparing four businesses skips the one that will not say. Publish a range with a note that it varies — you will get fewer, better enquiries.
5. No clear next step
Many pages end with a paragraph and nothing else. Every page should end by telling the visitor what to do: call, WhatsApp, or fill the form. Do not assume they will scroll back up to find the menu.
6. Stock photos of foreign offices
A visitor from Google does not know you. Photos of your actual premises, your actual team and your actual work build trust. A slightly imperfect real photo beats a polished stock image of people who do not work for you.
7. Light grey text on white
It looks elegant in a design tool on a bright monitor. On a phone in daylight it is unreadable. Body text needs genuine contrast — this is also an accessibility requirement, not just an aesthetic preference.
8. One page listing every service
A single Services page with twelve bullet points will rank for none of them. One page per service, each answering that service's questions thoroughly, is how you appear in search for each thing you actually do.
9. No Google Analytics
Without analytics you are guessing about which pages work. It is free, it takes ten minutes to install, and it changes decisions — most owners are surprised which page actually drives their enquiries.
10. The menu PDF
Restaurants especially. A PDF has to download, opens in a separate viewer, needs pinch-zoom, and cannot be read by Google. An HTML menu loads instantly and gets indexed, so dish names start appearing in search.
11. No SSL certificate
Browsers now show a 'Not secure' warning on sites without HTTPS. Modern hosting includes SSL free. If your site still shows that warning, it is costing you visitors before they read a word.
12. Nobody can update it
If changing a price requires emailing a developer and waiting a week, the site will go stale. Stale sites lose rankings to competitors who publish regularly. An admin panel removes that dependency entirely.
