Local Citations and NAP Consistency: The Boring SEO That Works
Google cross-checks your business details across the web. If three directories list three different addresses, that costs you.
A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website. Google uses the consistency of these mentions as a trust signal for local ranking — the more places that agree, the more confident it is that you are a real, established business.
Why consistency matters more than volume
Fifty listings with three different phone numbers is worse than fifteen listings that all match exactly. Google is looking for corroboration, and contradictions reduce confidence.
Consistency means character-for-character. 'Shop 12, Malviya Nagar' and 'Shop No. 12, Malviya Nagar' are different strings. Pick one exact format and use it everywhere, including your own website footer.

Duplicate listings
Duplicates happen when a listing is created twice, or when an old address is never removed after a move. They split your reviews and confuse Google about which listing is authoritative. On Google Business Profile you can report a duplicate for merging; on other directories you generally have to claim and edit or contact support.
